Certified Nursing Assistant/Medical Assistant

LINES OF AUTHORITY:  This position is supervised by the relevant site Customer Service Supervisor and is sometimes directed by the outpatient Medical Practitioners.  This position does not supervise any other personnel.

POSITION SUMMARY:  The primary function of this position is to provide medical support to the   outpatient nurse and medical practitioners.  The Outpatient Nursing/Medical Assistant will perform duties within his/her scope of practice.  The position's responsibility includes, but is not limited to, obtaining vital signs, specimens, charting, filing, providing clerical support, stocking supplies.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Obtain client height and weight, temperature, abdominal girth, pulse, respirations, and blood pressures, and calculate body mass index (BMI) and document such in the medical record prior to service with Behavioral Health Medical Practitioner (BHMP).
  2. Completes review of client's record prior to service with BHMP, relative to lab results, need for prior authorization for medications, checking the Controlled Substance Provider Monitoring Program (CSPMP), current medical status, complete Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) and provide information to BHMP about these items, as evidenced by documentation in the medical record.
  3. Provides initial medical service to clients on a walk-in basis and evaluates which clients then need to receive immediate care from outpatient nurse or BHMP, as evidenced by documentation in medical record.
  4. Distributes sample medications as ordered by BHMP's, as evidenced by documentation in the medical record and samples tracking log.
  5. Completes outreach activities with Suboxone clients, as well as with clients who have missed injection appointments, as evidenced by tracking logs and documentation in clinical records.
  6. Coordinates lab orders when needed, as well as collecting random urine drug screen/saliva tests, as evidenced by documentation in medical records.
  7. Distributes medication packs to clients as needed, as evidenced by documentation in medical record and direct observation.
  8. Completes coordination of care activities after BHMP appointment, as directed by the BHMP, with primary care physicians and other clinical team members, as evidenced by direct observation and review of clinical records.
  9. Monitor medication refrigerator temperatures as required, as evidenced by completion of temperature tracking logs.
  10. Work well under pressure, meeting multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines: at all times demonstrates cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.
  11. Able to effectively de-escalate clients using techniques as trained and outlined in approved crisis intervention models.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUISITES:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Arizona fingerprint/certified.  Lack of certification status as per Licensing standard is grounds for immediate dismissal.
  • Current  Nursing Assistant Certification in good standing
  • High School Diploma or GED OR certificate from Medical Assistant program
  • Current CPR Certification.
  • Valid Arizona driver's license (free of any restrictions) and proof of valid auto insurance

Preferred: 

  • 1-3 years experience in Psychiatric Health setting.
  • Certified in phlebotomy practice and injection administration.

CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY

Staff responsible for providing services to chemically dependent members has appropriate training, education, experience, performance and demonstrate competency.

Staff must be able to gather and assess information about:

  • The relationship of each member's physical status to the dependence.
  • The nature of the emotional compulsion to use alcohol and/or other drugs.
  • The intensity of the member's preoccupation with using alcohol/and/or other drugs.

Staff must also demonstrate competency in their ability to:

  • Interpret information about a member's use of alcohol and/or other drugs.
  • Develop a written summary and/or treatment plan based on member's problems and needs;
  • Provide appropriate services.

SERIOUSLY MENTALLY ILL

Staff responsible for providing services to seriously mentally ill members has appropriate training, education, experience, performance and demonstrate competency.

  • Staff has knowledge and ability to gather and interpret information about seriously mentally ill members.
  • Staff understands the member's needs and the range, intensity, and duration of care, habilitation and rehabilitation required.

INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED

Staff responsible for providing services to members with intellectual disabilities has appropriate training, education, experience, performance and demonstrate competency.

  • Staff has knowledge and ability to gather and interpret information about a member with an intellectual disability.
  • Staff understands the member's needs and the range, intensity, and duration of care, habilitation or rehabilitation required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Occasional lifting (40 lbs.) and reaching.

Equipment Operation

  • Telephone, copier, weight scales, blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, thermometer.
  • Computer and Keyboard.
  • Company vehicle
