BH MEDICAL PRACTITIONER NP

LINES OF AUTHORITY:  This position is supervised by Medical Director.  Unless specifically designated, this position does not supervise any other personnel.

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the provision of psychiatric services.  Practices independently, but utilizes Medical Director for administrative direction and case consultation as necessary.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Facilitates entry into the Clinic behavioral health system.
  2. Elicits a health, illness, psychosocial and family history.
  3. Performs physical exams as medically indicated.
  4. Orders appropriate diagnostic tests as medically indicated and as contract allows.
  5. Records the history, physical examination, diagnostic tests, and an evaluation of health status based on assessment data and independent medical decision-making.
  6. Establishes and records a plan of care.
  7. Regulates and adjusts medications and treatments.
  8. Monitors and records progress, evaluates plan of care and makes modifications accordingly.
  9. Consults and collaborates with members of the health care team in the assessment and management of mental health problems and physical health conditions.  Provides teaching and counseling aimed at prevention of illness, remediation of risk factors to health, and maintenance of high level wellness.
  10. Provides initial care of psychiatric emergencies and arranges for continuing definitive care.
  11. Assumes responsibility for the identification and therapeutic management of minor illnesses.
  12. The employee must work well under pressure meeting multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines.  The employee shall, at all times, demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.
  13. Able to effectively de-escalate clients using techniques as trained and outlined in approved crisis intervention models.
  14. Participates in the Performance Improvement processes in the Clinic.

PRIMARY CONTACTS:

  • Interfaces with medical, clinical, clerical and other staff  to facilitate delivery of quality care.
  • Interfaces with other providers of health care services

POSITION REQUISITES:

Qualifications and Experience

Required:

  • Master's Degree or Doctorate in Psychiatric Nursing.
  • Substantial experience in Mental Health.
  • Ability to analyze and assess situations and clients.
  • Ability to make sound judgments relating to client care.
  • Ability to complete accurate client record documentation.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner License, DEA Registration when obtained.
  • Credentialed by contracted health plans and privileged by Mohave Mental Health Clinic, Inc. (MMHC).

REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS: Persons conducting assessments and/or providing treatment and/ or supervision for special populations are able, through training and experience as well as through agency-specific observation or competency testing of performance to:

SUBSTANCE USE Staff responsible for providing services to substance using members has appropriate training, education, experience, performance and demonstrate competency.

Staff must be able to gather and assess information about:

  • The relationship of each member's physical status to the substance use .
  • The nature of the emotional compulsion to use alcohol and/or other drugs.
  • The intensity of the member's preoccupation with using alcohol/and/or other drugs.
  • Staff must also demonstrate competency in their ability to:
  • Interpret information about a member's use of alcohol and/or other drugs.
  • Develop a written summary and/or treatment plan based on member's problems and needs.
  • Provide appropriate services.

CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

Staff responsible for providing services to child and adolescent members have appropriate training, education, experience, performance and demonstrate competency.

  • Staff demonstrates knowledge of growth and development of children and adolescents.
  • Staff demonstrates their ability to develop treatment plans and services based on member's problem and needs.
  • Staff demonstrates knowledge and skill in working with family systems.

SERIOUSLY MENTALLY ILL

Staff responsible for providing services to seriously mentally ill members has appropriate training, education, experience, performance and demonstrate competency.

  • Staff has knowledge and ability to gather and interpret information about seriously mentally ill members.
  • Staff understands the member's needs and the range, intensity, and duration of care, habilitation and rehabilitation required.

INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED

Staff responsible for providing services to members with intellectual disabilities has appropriate training, education, experience, performance and demonstrate competency.

  • Staff has knowledge and ability to gather and interpret information about a member with an intellectual disability.
  • Staff understands the member's needs and the range, intensity, and duration of care, habilitation or rehabilitation required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Requirements

  • Able to sit, stand and drive for extended periods of time.

Equipment Operation

  • Copy machine, computer, telephone, Clinic vehicles

Environmental Conditions

  • Air conditioned and/or heated office setting.
